Vernal Witch-hazel

The Vernal Witch-hazel, Hamamelis vernalis, is a deciduous, winter-blooming shrub, with a rounded habit which typically grows 6-10\’ tall with a somewhat larger spread. The fragrant, globular flower clusters have variable coloration, but flowers most frequently have yellow petals and reddish inner calyxes. Extract obtained from the leaves, bark and stems was formerly used medicinally by native Americans for, inter alia, external treatment of sprains, bruises and inflammations.

Nantes Carrot

The Carrot Scarlet Nantes, \’Daucus carota var. sativus\’, is an old standard that has a reputation for sweet flavor and crisp texture. The bright orange-red roots are 6 to 7 inches long. The open pollinated Scarlet Nantes deserves to be and old favorite because of the sweet flavor, crisp texture and an inconspicuous core. The dye from carrots is used to color butter. A 50% peat moss mix with the soil is ideal. Even moisture is essential.

Lemon Licorice

The Licorice, Lemon Licorice, \’Helichrysum petiolare\’, is a pale lime plant that lets you do a little to get a lot. Licorice plants are exceptionally easy to grow, requiring little fertilizer. The Lemon Licorice is restrained grower with velvety soft foliage. It\’s especially useful in mixed containers as it tends to grow outward which makes a planter or basket look larger. Licorice do best in a well drained soil, either in beds or containers. Lemon Licorice produces small white flowers that are insignificant and can be removed.For zones 9-11, this plant can also be a perennial.
